Today is “leap day.” Do you know what this means? Well, according to British Isles Tradition, a woman may propose to that special man in her life. This wild tradition dates back to a 1288 law passed by Queen Margaret of Scotland. She set up fines and penalties for the men that refused a proposal. Penalties typically included the purchase of a silk gown or twelve pairs of gloves. The equivalence to a silk gown in today’s world is probably a vacation home (not really, but let’s pretend just for a moment). You may risk the embarrassment of a rejection for a waterfront home at Martha’s Vineyard, right? Oh and did we mention that Queen Margaret was also five when she set up this law? Five.
So, if your heart desires you to put a ring on your man…or your dream vacation home just dropped in price, we say go for it. Propose. You won’t have another chance for another 4 years. Happy Leap Day!
